  • My own paid intake cost $200 and took 90 minutes. The call was fine. The roster was the problem.

What happens first with a matchmaker?

It starts with a call or a meeting. The firm wants to know if they can help you. You want to know if they’re worth your money.

Some firms charge for this first meeting and some don’t. I paid $200 for mine. DateSpot charges $299 for its 45-minute strategy call DateSpot FAQ · checked Oct 15, 2026. Tawkify starts clients with a 60-minute onboarding call Tawkify FAQ · checked Oct 15, 2026. Mine was a paid one.

The call itself was fine. The pool was the problem, which is why the checklist below starts with the pool.

How does a matchmaker work, step by step?

The timeline shows the basic matchmaking process, in order. Every firm does it a little differently, so I’ve left out timings. Ask each firm for theirs.

  1. Consultation, free or paid
  2. Contract and payment
  3. Deep-dive interview
  4. Search and screening
  5. First introduction
  6. The date
  7. Feedback from both of you
  8. Next match, or a hold

A few real examples from firms’ own pages:

  • It’s Just Lunch describes a six-step process. They arrange the date, ask for your feedback, and let you put your membership on hold if you feel a spark It’s Just Lunch · checked Oct 15, 2026.
  • Three Day Rule pairs you with a personal matchmaker and a coach, then screens matches against your goals, values and lifestyle Three Day Rule · checked Oct 15, 2026.
  • Selective Search gives you a full profile on each person before you meet Selective Search FAQ · checked Oct 15, 2026.

What should you ask on the intake call?

Take this to your first call and tick each one off. More than one dodge is a bad sign.

The contract questions go deeper in the matchmaker contract checklist.

What does a matchmaker do while you wait?

This is the quiet part. You might not hear much for a while. Behind the scenes, a good matchmaker is doing three things.

  1. Searching their pool. Tawkify says its network has over 3 million singles, and its matchmakers can search beyond it Tawkify FAQ · checked Oct 15, 2026.
  2. Recruiting. Master Matchmakers lists active recruiting as part of its Premium service Master Matchmakers · checked Oct 15, 2026. VIDA Select says its matchmakers also search dating and social platforms VIDA Select FAQ · checked Oct 15, 2026.
  3. Screening. At Tawkify, that means a criminal record screening and a live video screening for every match.

If weeks go by with no word, it’s fair to ask for an update. You’re paying for this.

What is a first introduction like?

You’ll usually hear about one person at a time. Some firms show you a profile first. Others keep it closer to a blind date. Tawkify says it puts compatibility before photos, but still considers physical preferences.

Many firms also handle the logistics. It’s Just Lunch says it does all the work to arrange the date. You just show up.

After the date, you both give feedback. Be honest and specific. “Nice but no spark” doesn’t help much. “He talked about his ex for 20 minutes” does.

How long does the matchmaking process take?

Longer than you might think. These are the search lengths a few firms publish.

Firm Search length they publish Source
DateSpot 4 months, up to 6 with a pause DateSpot FAQ
LUMA A 6-month search LUMA
Selective Search Usually 6 to 12 months Selective Search FAQ
Kelleher International Usually 1 to 2 years Kelleher
Tawkify About 1 match per month Tawkify FAQ

All checked on Oct 15, 2026. If a firm can’t tell you how long a search usually takes, be wary.

What should a matchmaker never do?

  • Promise you a relationship. Kelleher’s own site says no reputable service can guarantee chemistry.
  • Pressure you to sign on the first call.
  • Keep the price secret until after a paid meeting.
  • Go quiet for months with no update.
  • Swap your refund for “substitutions” without saying so up front.

What if it isn’t working?

First, give feedback. Tell them exactly what’s missing. A good matchmaker will adjust.

Second, check your contract for a hold or an exit. In New York, a dating service contract must let you put your membership on hold for up to one year NY GBL § 394-c · checked Oct 15, 2026. Some states also give you a short window to cancel right after you sign. See dating service contract cancellation rights.

Third, ask yourself if a matchmaker is the right tool. Read is a matchmaker worth it or matchmaker vs dating coach.

Questions people ask

What happens at the first meeting with a matchmaker?

They ask about your life, your past relationships and what you want. They should also explain how they find matches, what it costs and what the contract says. Some charge for this meeting and some don't.

How does a matchmaker work?

First comes an interview. Then they search their pool, recruit new people, screen each match and set up the date. Afterward they ask you both for feedback, and the cycle repeats.

How long until my first date?

It varies by firm and by how specific you are. At Tawkify, clients typically get about one match per month. Ask for a timeline in writing.

Do I see photos before the date?

Not always. Tawkify says it puts compatibility before photos but still considers physical preferences. Ask each firm how it handles photos.

What if I don't like my matches?

Give honest, specific feedback after every date. If the matches still miss, ask what your contract says about pausing or ending the search.

Can I pause if I meet someone?

Many firms allow a hold. In New York, the law says a dating service contract must let you put your membership on hold for up to one year.

Does a matchmaker do coaching too?

Some do. Three Day Rule pairs clients with a matchmaker and a coach. Others only make introductions, so ask.
