Questions people ask

Is a relationship coach a therapist?

No. A therapist holds a state license and can treat mental health conditions. A coach needs no license and works on goals and skills. Some therapists also coach, so ask which hat they're wearing.

Do I need a certified coach?

Not legally. A credential like the ICF's shows training hours and an ethics code, which is a plus. It doesn't prove the coach is good for you.

Should I see a dating coach or a therapist?

If you're stuck on practical things like profiles, texting or first dates, a coach fits. If you feel low, anxious or keep repeating painful patterns, start with a therapist.

Can a relationship coach work with couples?

Many do. Ask whether they see couples together, one partner at a time, or both. Abuse or fear in the relationship calls for a licensed professional instead.

Does insurance cover dating or relationship coaching?

Usually not. Insurance covers medically necessary care for a diagnosable condition, which coaching isn't.

What's the difference between a dating coach and a relationship coach?

A dating coach helps you find and choose a partner. A relationship coach helps you build or fix the relationship you're in. Many coaches do both.

How many sessions will I need?

There's no standard. Ask for one session first, then agree on a short block with a clear goal.
