How to Become a Dating Coach

Do you need a license to be a dating coach?

No. There is no state license for dating coaches, and no board runs the field.

ProPublica looked into this in 2024. It found that life coaches are mostly unregulated in the US, and that anyone can use the title ProPublica, June 17, 2024 · checked Oct 15, 2026. That cuts both ways. You can start this week, and so can a guy with a ring light and a hot take. That is why buyers keep asking are dating coaches scams, and why they will care more about your proof than your title.

The only hard line is therapy. ProPublica notes that in Utah, rules kick in when a coach diagnoses clients. If a client needs treatment, send them to a therapist. My dating coach vs therapist page explains the difference to readers.

What are the real routes into dating coaching?

There are five common routes, and you can mix them. The prices below are what each school lists on its own site.

The Level 1 and Level 2 details come from ICF ICF, Find Coaching Education · checked Oct 15, 2026. ICF says a Level 1 program meets the full education rules for the ACC. Its free Education Search Service lists the programs it has accredited.

Hart Coaching Academy’s page does not mention ICF. That’s fine, but it means the certificate is the school’s own, so check what you are buying.

What do the ICF credential levels require?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) has three credential levels. The table below comes from ICF’s own pages ICF, Compare Credentials · checked Oct 15, 2026 ICF, Experience Requirements · checked Oct 15, 2026.

ICF has some smaller rules too. For the ACC, 25 of your hours must fall within the 18 months before you apply, and for the PCC it is 50. Pro bono hours count, but you still need the paid minimum. ICF lists the PCC as a prerequisite for the MCC. You also have to record real sessions: ICF asks for 1 recorded session for the ACC and 2 for the PCC and MCC.

ICF does not say anything about dating. Its credentials cover coaching skills in general, so the dating know-how is on you.

Dating coach certification vs an ICF credential: what’s the difference?

People mix these up all the time. A certification is what a school gives you when you finish its course, and each school sets its own bar. An ICF credential (ACC, PCC or MCC) comes from ICF, after you prove your hours, do mentor coaching and pass the exam.

Neither one is a license, and neither one proves a coach is good at dating help. A “certified dating and relationship coach” could mean either one, so ask which. If you are new to this whole world, my page on what is a dating coach covers what the job involves.

How much does dating coach certification cost?

Only two of the schools I checked list a price on their own site.

• Hart Coaching Academy: $1,997 in one payment, or 6 monthly payments of $377. It offers a 30-day money-back guarantee Hart · checked Oct 15, 2026.
• Relationship Coaching Institute: $3,997 to enroll, then $79 a month. It mentions payment plans but does not list the terms RCI · checked Oct 15, 2026.

For ICF-accredited programs, each school sets its own price. Budget for the 10 hours of mentor coaching too, since every ICF level needs it.

How do you check a dating coach’s credential?

This part is for buyers, and it takes five minutes. Start by asking the coach which credential they hold and who gave it. A good coach answers in one line.

For an ICF credential, search their name on ICF’s free Verify a Coach page. It shows if someone is an ICF member and if they hold an ACC, PCC or MCC in good standing. For a school certificate, email the school and ask them to confirm the name and date.

What does a certificate not tell you?

A certificate tells you someone sat through a course. It does not tell you their price, their refund terms, or how they treat people.

So ask for the boring stuff: the price and refund terms in writing, and a past client who will talk to you.

How do you start without overselling?

If you want to coach, practice first. Coach a few friends for free and ask them what helped and what didn’t. Then pick a lane, like profiles, first dates or dating after divorce, because one clear problem beats ten vague ones.

Put your price on your site so buyers don’t have to guess. Write your refund terms down too, and even if the answer is “no refunds after session two,” say it. Use real reviews only.
