How to find a dating coach in 7 steps

All seven steps take about five hours of your time, spread over a week or two. I’ve put a time estimate on each one.

1. Spend 10 minutes writing down one goal in a single sentence, such as “I want to stop dating men who aren’t sure about me.” A coach can’t work on “everything.”
2. Take another 10 minutes to set your top number and decide whether you want video or in person. Do this before any sales call, so you aren’t deciding in the middle of one.
3. Build a shortlist of three, which takes an hour. Ask friends first, then try a directory or a coach whose writing or podcast you already trust. ICF suggests interviewing three coaches before you hire.
4. Check what you can verify, which takes 30 minutes per coach. Look for a price, training you can look up and terms in writing, and if a coach says they’re a therapist, check the state license.
5. Send all three coaches the message below, word for word. It takes 15 minutes, and it lets you compare their answers side by side.
6. Take the intro calls, 30 minutes each, with the question list in front of you. Notice how each coach questions you, and don’t pay on the call.
7. Spend 20 minutes reading the terms before you decide. Find the refund rule, the number of sessions and the end date, and if any of it isn’t written down, ask for it by email.

How do you send the first message?

You’ve done the research. Now you have to write to a stranger about your love life, which is the brave part. It’s also the easy part, because you can copy this:

Hi [name], I’m looking for a dating coach. My goal is [one sentence]. My budget is about [amount] in total, and I’d like [video or in person]. Could you send me your price, how many sessions that covers, and your refund policy? If it looks like a fit, I’d like to book an intro call. Thanks, [first name]

Send the same message to all three. A coach who answers with a clear price and terms has already passed one test. A coach who answers with “let’s hop on a call to talk about investment” hasn’t.

What should you ask on the intro call?

Five questions do most of the work:

1. Who do you usually help, and what do they usually need?
2. What training do you have, and can I look it up?
3. What’s the total price, and how many sessions is that?
4. What happens to my money if I stop early?
5. When would you send me to a therapist instead?

How to hire a dating coach without getting burned

Once you’ve found one you like, check a few things before you pay. Get everything in one document: the price, the number of sessions, the session length and the end date. ICF’s ethics code says money and terms should be agreed before coaching begins ICF Code of Ethics · checked Oct 15, 2026.

Then find the refund rule. Some coaches say no refunds once you start. A Little Nudge’s terms say exactly that, but allow a pause of up to six months A Little Nudge terms · checked Oct 15, 2026. Strict is fine if it’s clear and you knew before paying. You should also get the price before you hand over personal details. Pay with a credit card if you can. If something goes wrong, your dispute has to reach the card issuer within 60 days after the first bill with the error, and you also have to try to sort it out with the seller first FTC · checked Oct 15, 2026.

Should you look for a coach near you or online?

Online gives you far more choice, since talk and homework work fine over video. Some coaches do offer in-person help.
