A single session works best when you have one clear question, like a profile that gets no replies. A program works best when the problem is a pattern, like dating the same unavailable person in a new jacket. If you can’t tell which one you have, what a dating coach does walks through the usual reasons people hire one.

Why do women in Chicago hire a dating coach?

The coaches’ own pages give the same few reasons. Smart Dating Academy speaks to women coming back after a divorce or a loss. Camille Virginia speaks to women who are done with the apps and want to meet people in person. Michelle Herzog speaks to women who are worn out by the way dating works now.

My guess is you’re in one of those groups. I’ve been in two of them. After my divorce I treated dating like a job search, with a spreadsheet and 31 dates in a year. Later I got so tired of the apps that I deleted them for six months. What helped most was a routine I could actually keep, 15 minutes a day and no swiping after 9 p.m.

A good coach gives you structure and someone to answer to. A coach can’t hand you a person.

In person helps with photos and with practicing out in the world. For most of the work, which is talking through what happened on the last date and what to try next, a video call is just as good, and you skip the drive down Lake Shore. What are Chicago singles saying about dating right now?

In November 2023, ABC7 Chicago talked to Chicago-area singles who had quit the apps. One Naperville woman compared the apps to wandering the aisles of a warehouse store, with rows and rows of pictures ABC7 Chicago · checked Oct 21, 2026. A Batavia woman told the station she paid a matchmaker about $3,000, and she’s now engaged.

The same report said matchmaking can cost $2,500 to $25,000, depending on the company. It also said one local matchmaking firm includes one-on-one coaching, background checks and professional photos in its service.

Chicago has a season for meeting people, too. Anita Chlipala, who founded Relationship Reality 312, argued in Time Out Chicago that summer is the best time to find love in the city Time Out Chicago · checked Oct 21, 2026. She pointed to lakefront bike rides, festivals, kayaking, concerts and art fairs as better first dates than another drink. That piece is from 2015, but the lake hasn’t moved.

How do you spot a bad dating coach?

Most coaches are honest people selling a service. A few aren’t. These are the signs I’d walk away from.

The coach promises you’ll be in a relationship by a date. Nobody can promise that.
The plan is a set of tricks for getting someone to chase you, or for making them feel unsure.
The price only comes out at the end of a long “free” call, and you’re pushed to pay that day.
There’s no written answer about refunds. Camille Virginia’s page, to her credit, says plainly that her packages are not refundable, so you know before you pay.
The coach can’t say what happens if you need to stop after a month.
