What does California law say about a matchmaking contract?
California regulates dating service contracts in Civil Code § 1694 and the sections after it. I read the text on FindLaw, which lists it as current as of Jan 1, 2026.
- Cancel in writing by midnight of the third business day after you sign. The seller then has 10 days from getting your notice to refund you (§ 1694.1 · checked Oct 15, 2026).
- The contract must be in writing, and you get a copy. The cancel notice must sit near your signature in bold type (§ 1694.2 · checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Payments can’t run more than 2 years from the contract date, and the contract can’t last for your lifetime (§ 1694.2).
- You can cancel at any time if the contract breaks these rules (§ 1694.2).
- If you die or become disabled, you or your estate can stop paying for services you haven’t received (§ 1694.3 · checked Oct 15, 2026).
- If you move more than 50 miles from the office and can’t transfer, you can stop paying for future services. The seller can charge a fee of up to $100 (§ 1694.3).
