What do DC singles say about matchmakers?
Both of these are anecdotes. When Three Day Rule opened in DC in January 2015, The Georgetown Dish talked to its founder. The Georgetown Dish, Jan 22, 2015 · checked Oct 15, 2026
Her main points:
- The founder said many singles feel buried in options. She called it dating overload.
- She pitched matchmaking as a slower, hands-on choice compared with bars and apps.
- The DC office joined offices in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Chicago.
- The service was aimed at people who’d been too busy to look for a long-term partner.
DC Matchmaking’s founder tells a story of her own on her about page. She says friends spent a lot of money on dating services and felt the companies cared more about quotas than good matches. DC Matchmaking, About · checked Oct 15, 2026
Both are matchmakers talking about matchmaking, so take them with salt. But the quota worry is real. If a firm talks more about how many introductions you’ll get than about who they are, ask why.
Dating coach DC: coach or matchmaker?
Dates that all stall at the third one call for a coach, who works on how you date. A calendar with no room to meet anyone calls for a matchmaker, who does the finding.
| Matchmaker | Dating coach | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | Someone else finds and screens your dates | Help with your profile, your choices and your dates |
| DC prices I found | $450 registry; $3,500 to $35,000 at one firm; national firms from $20,000 | No DC coach I checked posts a price |
| Who finds the people | The firm | You |
| Best for | No time, clear goals | Dates that keep fizzling out |
| Watch out for | Quotas over fit | Tactics that game people |
DC Matchmaking offers coaching, and Master Matchmakers builds coaching into its Premium price. If coaching is all you want, ask for it on its own. Still torn? Read matchmaker vs dating coach. Typical prices are on dating coach cost, and questions to ask a dating coach is the list to bring to a free call.
What are the contract rules in DC?
No District law for dating services turned up that I could verify, and I only quote rules I’ve read. You have rights anyway. Three steps:
- Have them email the contract, and read it at home before paying.
- Find four things in it: the cancel clause, the refund clause, the hold rule and the end date.
- If the firm goes back on its written terms, contact the DC Attorney General’s consumer protection team. The office lists 202-442-9828 and an online complaint form.
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule covers a narrow set of sales: ones made at your home, or at a seller’s temporary location like a hotel room or restaurant. For those, services included, you have until midnight of the third business day to cancel. Home sales need to be $25 or more, and temporary-location sales $130 or more. Nothing made fully online, by phone or at the seller’s own office qualifies. A timely cancel gives the seller 10 days to refund you. FTC Cooling-Off Rule · checked Oct 15, 2026
Other places’ rules are in dating service contract cancellation rights, and the matchmaker contract checklist is worth printing before you get on a sales call.
What should you ask on the first call?
Work through these before any talk of payment. If the offer expires when you hang up, don’t take it.
