What do Philly singles say about matchmakers?

In April 2019, The Philadelphia Inquirer spent time with a local matchmaker and one of her clients. Read it as one story, not data. Philadelphia Inquirer, April 23, 2019 · checked Oct 15, 2026

From that story:

  • The matchmaker said Philly singles feel like the city is a small town where everyone already knows each other. She pointed out it’s the sixth-largest city in the country.
  • Her goal was fewer, better dates.
  • A client from Northern Liberties said he was losing hope after years on dating apps, and the matchmaker’s short list of picks is what worked for him.
  • An industry analyst in the story blamed “dating app fatigue” for the rise in demand.

The matchmaker in that story was Michal Naisteter, then at Three Day Rule. She now runs Michal Matches, so it’s a matchmaker talking about matchmaking. But the small-town feeling is real in a lot of cities. When everyone on the apps seems to know your ex, a stranger with a wider network has real value.

Dating coach Philadelphia: coach or matchmaker?

Picking the same kind of person over and over is something a coach can work on. Having no time to meet anyone new is what a matchmaker is for.

Matchmaker Dating coach
What you pay for Someone else finds and screens your dates Help with your profile, your choices and your dates
Philly prices I found $5,500 for 3 months (2019 report); national firms from $20,000 No Philadelphia coach I checked posts a price
Who finds the people The firm You
Best for Little time, clear goals Dates that keep going nowhere
Watch out for A small pool in your age range Tactics that game people

Michal Matches does both, which can be handy. Ask for the coaching price on its own, so you’re not sold a full matchmaking package when you only need a few sessions. If you’re torn, matchmaker vs dating coach lays out the choice. Dating coach cost has typical prices, and the questions to ask a dating coach are worth having on any free call.

What are the contract rules in Pennsylvania?

I couldn’t verify a Pennsylvania statute for dating services, and I’d rather leave a gap than quote a rule I haven’t read. That gap doesn’t leave you without rights. Before you sign:

  • Read the contract at home, from an email copy, before any money changes hands.
  • Look for three things: how to cancel, how refunds work, and when it ends.
  • A firm that breaks its own terms can be reported to the Pennsylvania Attorney General.

Check whether the FTC Cooling-Off Rule fits your sale. It covers goods and services sold at your home ($25 or more) or at a seller’s temporary location like a hotel room or restaurant ($130 or more). You get until midnight of the third business day to cancel, and the seller then has 10 days to refund you. Sales closed fully online, by phone or at the seller’s own office don’t qualify. To compare with states that have a dating-service law, see dating service contract cancellation rights. Keep a printed matchmaker contract checklist next to you on any sales call.

What should you ask on the first call?

Ask all of these before you agree to pay anything. A same-day-only price means walk away.

Questions people ask

How much does a matchmaker cost in Philadelphia?

Few Philly firms post prices. The Inquirer reported a $5,500 three-month membership at Three Day Rule in 2019. LUMA and other national firms start at $20,000. Ask for the total in dollars before you share much.

Is there a free matchmaker in Philadelphia?

Three Day Rule has a free database for its Philadelphia network. Joining means you may be introduced to a paying client. It doesn't make you a client yourself.

Are there Philadelphia matchmakers who also coach?

Yes. Michal Matches offers matchmaking and dating coaching, and Dara Rae Matchmaking's founder has a master's degree in psychology. Neither posts a coaching price, so ask.

Can I cancel a matchmaking contract in Pennsylvania?

I couldn't verify a Pennsylvania statute for dating services. Check the cancel and refund clauses in your contract, and contact the Pennsylvania Attorney General if a firm won't honor them.

Do Philly matchmakers only work in the city?

No. Dara Rae Matchmaking serves Greater Philadelphia, Michal Matches works in person and online, and LUMA lists cities across Pennsylvania.

Is a dating coach cheaper than a matchmaker in Philadelphia?

Most likely, but none of the Philadelphia coaches I checked posts a price. Coaching is often sold by the session or in short packages, while matchmaking is sold by the month.

Do Philadelphia matchmakers guarantee a match?

Nobody can promise you a relationship, and Michal Matches says plainly that its strategy session does not guarantee a match. Read what your contract promises.
